 Skipped water care doesn't cause an immediate, obvious problem. It compounds quietly over weeks, which is exactly why it's easy to let slide — until it isn't.


What happens in the first week or two of neglect

Sanitizer levels drop first, usually within a few days of the last treatment. Bacteria and organic waste that would normally be broken down start accumulating instead. At this stage, water often still looks fine — this is the window where a simple shock treatment and re-test would fix everything, but it's also the window where most people don't realize anything needs fixing.


What happens after a month

pH and alkalinity, unaddressed, tend to drift together — usually upward, since evaporation and use both tend to push spa water toward higher pH over time. Once pH climbs, the sanitizer that's technically still present becomes far less effective, even at a "correct" measured concentration. This is the point where cloudiness, odor, or a filmy texture on surfaces typically shows up. It's also roughly the timeframe where TDS starts climbing enough to make the water noticeably harder to rebalance.


What happens if it goes longer than that

This is where the real costs start:

  • Bacterial growth becomes established, not just present — at this stage, a single shock treatment often isn't enough to fully clear it, because bacteria can form biofilm colonies that shield themselves from sanitizer (see our biofilm guide)
  • Corrosion and scaling begin affecting equipment — pumps, heaters, and jets are exposed to imbalanced water continuously, and mineral buildup or corrosion damage isn't something a later water change reverses
  • Skin and eye irritation becomes more likely for bathers — not from "too many chemicals," but from the opposite: insufficient sanitization combined with pH extremes

A spa neglected for two months might need a full plumbing flush to address biofilm, a filter replacement, and a drain-and-refill — three separate fixes instead of one. The repair cost scales with how long the imbalance was left unaddressed, which is the opposite of what most people assume ("it's just water, it can't get that much worse").


The realistic maintenance baseline that prevents this

  • Test pH, alkalinity, and sanitizer 2–3 times weekly
  • Shock the water on a consistent schedule, not just reactively
  • Clean or replace filters regularly — a clogged filter lets exactly the kind of debris through that leads to the problems above
  • Drain and refill every 4–6 months, sooner if TDS is climbing

Hidden Biofilm: A Silent Spa Adversary

 If your spa water tests fine on paper — pH, sanitizer, alkalinity all in range — but it still smells off, feels slimy in spots, or clouds up faster than it should, biofilm is a likely culprit that a standard test kit won't catch.


What biofilm actually is

Biofilm is a layer of microorganisms (bacteria, sometimes fungi) that attach to a surface and secrete a protective matrix around themselves — think of it as a microbial colony building its own shelter. That shelter is the problem: it shields the organisms from sanitizer, which is why a spa can have "correct" chlorine levels and still have an active biofilm colony living in the plumbing, under jets, or on the shell surface.

It forms fastest in warm, low-flow areas — inside pipes, behind jets, in filter housings — which is exactly the environment a hot tub provides.


Where it hides (and why your eyes miss it)

Biofilm doesn't always look like visible slime. Early-stage biofilm can be a barely-there film that changes the texture of a surface without an obvious visual sign. The places to actually check:

  • Jet faces and behind jet housings — run a finger along the inside edge, not just the visible face
  • Filter pleats — pull the filter and look at the base of the pleats, where debris collects
  • Waterline — a slightly tacky or filmy residue right at the water's surface line is one of the more reliable early indicators
  • Inside the plumbing — not something you can inspect directly, but it's often where a persistent odor originates even after the visible surfaces are clean


Signs it's biofilm and not just "dirty water"

  • An odor that returns within a day or two of shocking the water, even though sanitizer levels test correctly
  • Cloudiness that clears briefly after a shock treatment but comes back faster than it should
  • A slippery or filmy texture on surfaces that a normal wipe-down doesn't fully remove


How to actually clear it

A standard shock treatment often isn't enough on its own, because it treats the water, not the protected colony on a surface or inside plumbing. A more complete approach:

  1. Drain the spa. You can't effectively treat biofilm while diluting your treatment in a full tub of water.
  2. Run a plumbing flush treatment designed to circulate cleaner through the internal lines, not just the visible shell — this is what reaches the biofilm hiding in the plumbing.
  3. Scrub visible surfaces with a non-abrasive cleaner, focusing on jet faces, corners, and the waterline.
  4. Deep-clean or replace the filter. A biofilm-contaminated filter will reintroduce the problem into fresh water.
  5. Refill and rebalance — pH, alkalinity, and sanitizer from scratch, since a fresh fill starts at zero for all three.


Why prevention is easier than a cure

Once biofilm is established in plumbing, it tends to recur unless the underlying causes are addressed — usually infrequent water changes, low circulation, or sanitizer levels that dip too often between services. The habits that prevent it in the first place:

  • Running the spa long enough each use to complete a full filter cycle (roughly 15 minutes), which keeps water actually moving through the system rather than sitting stagnant in low-flow zones
  • Keeping sanitizer consistent rather than letting it swing low between top-offs
  • Sticking to a regular drain-and-refill schedule — every 4–6 months, sooner if TDS is climbing — so contaminants don't have months to accumulate
