Hot Tubs & Spas Total Cost of Ownership — What to Budget

The purchase price of a spa is the smallest number in its lifetime cost. Here's what actually shows up in your budget after delivery day, broken down by spa type and ongoing expense category.

What different spa types cost upfront

  • Inflatable: $300–$1,000 - Portable, plugs into a standard outlet, minimal hydrotherapy features.
  • Entry-level (rotomolded): $2,500–$5,000 - Durable shell, seats 2–4, under 350 gallons, less insulated
  • Value-priced (acrylic): $5,000–$8,000 - Better temperature retention, more customization, can fade/crack under direct UV
  • Premium: $8,000–$11,000 - Seats 3–8, 350–500 gallons, most common category manufacturers sell
  • Luxury: $11,000–$16,000+ - Highest-grade parts, most customization in jets/lighting/speakers
  • Swim Spa: Under $10,000 to $50,000+ - 700 to 2,000+ gallons depending on size; dual-temp models include a separate spa section

One-time setup costs people forget

  • Electrical installation: $1,200–$2,400, done by a licensed electrician before or right around delivery
  • Base/pad: $500–$2,500 — a filled spa can weigh over 6,000 lbs, so a proper pad (concrete, at least 6" thick, or engineered decking) isn't optional
  • Delivery and setup: $200–$800, more for difficult terrain or if a crane is needed for larger swim spas
  • Initial water fill: Under $3 in most of Arizona, despite the state ranking among the highest in the country for water utility rates

Ongoing costs, month to month

  • Energy: $10–25/month for a standard spa, ~$60/month for a swim spa — and counterintuitively, Arizona summers often cost less to run than winter months, since the heater barely cycles when it's 105°F outside
  • Chemicals (DIY): $15–30/month
  • Professional service: ~$125/month for bi-weekly water chemistry maintenance — this doesn't include periodic drain/detail visits, which are typically billed separately

Costs that show up periodically, not monthly

  • Repairs: $100–600/year in component replacement and labor over the spa's life
  • Cover replacement: $300–600 every 4–6 years under normal conditions — often every 2–3 years in Arizona without proper care (see our cover care guide)
  • Drain and refill (Spa RepHresh): every 4–6 months, sooner if TDS approaches 1500 ppm

What a full year actually looks like, by household

These are rough annual totals combining water, electric, chemicals, and service, excluding the initial purchase:

  • Couple, premium spa, full DIY, occasional use: ~$600/year
  • Moderate-use family, value-priced spa, bi-weekly pro service, twice-annual drain: ~$1,700/year
  • Property manager/high-usage rental, weekly pro service, frequent drains: ~$2,650/year
  • Large family, financed luxury spa, bi-weekly pro service, quarterly drain: ~$5,500/year (includes financing)
  • Athlete household, purchased swim spa, weekly pro service: ~$4,600/year
  • Athlete household, financed swim spa, weekly self-maintenance + occasional pro repairs: ~$6,200/year (includes financing)

The number that matters most: consistency, not total spend

The biggest cost driver isn't the spa type — it's how consistently the water is maintained. Neglected chemistry doesn't just risk a bad soak; it accelerates corrosion, scaling, and equipment wear that turn a $100 repair into a $600 one.

Whatever budget category you're in, the maintenance routine you commit to is what actually determines your long-term cost, not the spa's sticker price.
